Illustration Development

Using and Developing Illustrations

Illustrations can be used to convey a message to viewers or break up large chunks of text. Using illustrations can make information more compelling for viewers and make chunks of text easier to absorb.

Illustration Development

Process

  1. Research
  2. The first step in any design process is researching. In order to develop successful illustrations you have to be aware of what you are trying to convey and what icons the industry uses and recognizes. You also need to know where the illustrations you are creating will be displayed, the medium, and the size.
  3. Brainstorming
  4. Once you've done research you can begin brainstorming. In this step you can start developing what icons or other illustrations you will use for inspiration, possible colors, and illustration style.
  5. Sketches
  6. Sketching is a very important step, in this step you work out illustration designs that won't work and find one that will.
  7. Development
  8. Once you've developed a sketched illustration that will work, you can start developing the illustration on the computer. The development process will depend on the chosen style.

Challenges

  • Size
  • The size of the illustration is important, it dictates how much detail you can add and how many colors should be used. A very small illustration should be very simple with minimal detail and one color, using more detail can easily create confusion and distort the illustration into something else. The same is true for large illustrations, keeping it too simple can cause an illustration to be boring and ineffective.
  • Color limitations
  • Color limitations can limit the style of illustration used as well as its complexity. One way to create a more interesting piece when you have color limitations is to use tints, this allows you to get a range of colors while still only using one color.

  • Unknown Topics
  • Designing illustrations for a topic that you are unfamiliar with can be extremely challenging, you have to be sure you're designing effective illustrations. The best way to make sure to create effective illustrations is to take some extra time researching the topic.

Personal Projects: Book Design

Book Design In a previous post I talked about personal projects and why they are important. I just started a new personal project that I have found extremely relaxing and fun. I am a book junkie, I love reading. I love books of all different genres and topics, when I find a good book I can't put it down. When I was brainstorming different personal project ideas it seemed obvious that books should fall on the list somewhere. While trying to evolve this idea to design something including books the first thought was of course the cover and the layout on the inside, but I quickly felt skeptical about this idea because of the amount of time it would take to read the book and the amount of time that it would take for me to design the entire thing. After coming up with ideas and quickly dismissing them for about an hour I finally landed on my final project objective. Objective To relax and have fun while designing and developing book cover designs, while improving my illustration...
